Understanding mapping

The engine ‘Map' is the program that runs the engine. All modern computer controlled engines are designed with a huge number of control parameters built in to this map. By expanding these parameters we are able to increase the efficiency of the burn rate within the combustion chamber, thus releasing more power.

It is worth noting that this does not mean that your car will run any less reliably. You have to remember that Porsches are a mass produced item designed for a range of purposes and that the same Map which drives you to the shops is also powering you round your trackday.

On naturally aspirated engines there is a limit to how much we can achieve. The engine can only physically pull in X amount of air on each revolution and exhale Y amount of exhaust gasses per revolution.

To release the biggest gains you need to expand on these two parameters with a more free flowing exhaust and a lighter filter. A good quality filter and induction kit will help get more cool air in, without drastically affecting the level of filtration. A sports exhaust system, especially one with lower cell cats, will help get the gasses out of the car faster without increasing emissions too much.

On turbo charged engines we can modify the boost pressure created by the turbo's to improve on the combustion process also.

The Map can also be customised to suit your needs. If it's about all out power, this is easy to achieve, but the driveability and smoothness of the engine will be drastically altered. Torque can be improved upon also and this will give increased throttle response. Why not discuss with us, exactly what your intended use for the car is so we can tailor it to your needs.
