Project C.A.R.S - Cayman Autofarm RS

CONCEPT

Based on the theory that the Cayman is not fully recognised as a true Performance Porsche in the UK and that the most sought-after 911 models in the UK tend to be GT3's or GT3 RS, the Cayman Autofarm RS (CARS) concept is being developed to test the market for such a vehicle.

THEORY

The Cayman is a car that in theory could replace the 911 as the model that aspiring club racers, driving enthusiasts and people after a practical sports car seek to own. The near perfect weight distribution and neutral handling that is presented by its mid-mounted engine as well as its relatively small size is open for exploitation by the independent aftermarket tuning companies and weekend track-day warriors.

OBJECTIVE

The objective was to develop a range of upgrades for the Cayman S model. This aimed to produce for the enthusiast a specialist vehicle with increased performance, improved dynamics, and refined ergonomics at a price below that of an equivalent 911 with the same or greater overall performance.

All components tested on the vehicle (and to be tested in the future) have been chosen and kept based on simple engineering principles. The best example of this was the first set of wheels we chose. Volk TE37's may not be to everyone's tastes, but as a single piece forged rim that is extremely light weight, vastly reducing inertia forces and un-sprung mass whilst keeping a very strong support between the car and the road; they work extremely well as a practical track day/road wheel.

DEVELOPMENT

Utilising a standard Cayman S we have prepared and tested a range of tuning options and products in stages designed to offer the customer an array of performance and dynamic improvements at affordable prices. These include a choice selection of aftermarket bolt on components, all the way up to our fully developed in house engine upgrades.

The car has been put through its paces by the Autofarm team. In fact the engine achieved its 1000 miles of running in, in just a single night as the team drove in shifts to get the job done.

HORSEPOWER

At the heart of the Cayman RS, is the Autofarm developed Silsleeve engine. Originally at factory 3.4, this was increased to 3.7 and will soon be offered at 3.9. Naturally aspirated with more aggressive cam-shafts, this fast revving unit produced over 365bhp (in 3.7 form) with our own custom ECU re-map.

THE FUTURE

From here the project will continue. Further trying and testing aftermarket components as well as developing our own in house engineering solutions.
